Recovery after Breast Augmentation

Dermatology, Cosmetic and Plastic Surgery in New York City (NYC) and Manhattan

If you are considering breast augmentation, remember to factor recovery time into your planning. As a surgical procedure, breast augmentation does require some recovery time, and allowing yourself to rest and recover adequately will improve your results and reduce your risks of surgical complications.

This page is for women considering breast augmentation, not for our current patients. If you are a current patient with questions about recovery, please consult your postoperative instructions. If you have additional questions, you can use the 24-hour contact number you were given or call us at (888) 610-3133. Women considering breast augmentation who want to discuss recovery with one of our cosmetic surgeons can schedule a consultation at Juva Skin and Laser in central Manhattan.

The Day of Your Surgery

After your breast augmentation surgery, we will take you to our recovery room to make sure you are properly recovered from anesthesia before you are released. Because we do not use general anesthesia, the risk of adverse response to anesthesia is reduced, but we still want to make sure you are fully recovered before we release you. You have to have a responsible adult to drive you home and remain with you during your first day of recovery.

You are free to eat if you feel like it, and you should drink water or other fluids to avoid dehydration. Otherwise, give yourself license to rest and recover this first day.

The Week after Surgery

How you feel during your first week varies widely from person to person and procedure to procedure. Many women report feeling little discomfort, while others report that discomfort is significant. This will also depend on your breast implant placement with submuscular placement typically resulting in more discomfort. Even if you feel fine, we recommend taking it easy during this first week. You might want to enlist help for household tasks and caring for children and/or pets. It's also helpful if you reorganize your kitchen before surgery to reduce the amount of reaching up or down.

At the end of the first week, you'll have a follow-up to make sure everything is progressing well, and you'll likely be cleared for returning to work at this point.

Full Recovery and Final Results

Once you are cleared to return to work, you should continue to avoid strenuous activity until cleared to return. It's a good idea to begin returning gradually to your normal workout routine, but make sure you check with your doctor before returning to any specific type of exercise. By four weeks after surgery, you should be able to return completely to your normal routine.

At first, your breasts may look a little larger and higher on the chest than you desired. Do not worry, this is mostly the result of postoperative swelling. As the swelling goes down, your results will settle into your desired size and an attractive shape. Typically, you should see final results by 4-6 weeks after surgery.
