Breast Implant Placement Options
Dermatology, Cosmetic and Plastic Surgery in New York City (NYC) and Manhattan
Breast augmentation can help you achieve the look you desire by increasing the size and improving the shape of your breasts. Breast augmentation can be highly customized to ensure you get the exact look you desire, and the placement of your breast implants is one of the ways you can customize your results. Placing the breast implants directly under the breast can lead to more dramatic results including more well-defined cleavage, while placing the breast implants under the pectoral muscle can result in subtler, more natural-looking appearance.
This page outlines some of the most important distinctions between the two breast implant placement options, but it cannot give you recommendations about which is right for you. Breast Implant Placement Options
There are two commonly-used options for breast implant placement:
- Directly under the breast (subglandular)
- Under the pectoral muscle (submuscular)
Placement of the breast implant directly under the breast was the first method used for breast augmentation. Submuscular placement actually only places the breast implant partly under the pectoral muscle. Sometimes this is called dual plane or partial submuscular placement by doctors who perform full submuscular placement, which is uncommon.
Advantages of Subglandular Placement
Placement of breast implants directly under the breast has some advantages:
- More defined cleavage
- Implants move along with the breast
- Shorter recovery time
Subglandular placement means that the cleavage can be closer and more defined because there is no muscle interfering with the appearance of the breast implants. Also, because breast implants become part of the natural breast, they will move along with the natural breast and not because of movements of the pectoral muscle, which some believe creates a better-looking result. Finally, most women have a shorter recovery time with less discomfort after subglandular breast augmentation because the method does not interfere with the pectoral muscles.
Advantages of Submuscular Placement
Placement of breast implants under the pectoral muscle has become the most popular variation because its advantages are considered to be more important by many women:
- Subtler results
- Breast implants better concealed
- Less sagging over time
- Less interference with breast exams and mammograms
- Lower risk of capsular contracture
The concealment of the breast implants under the pectoral muscle with submuscular placement is an important consideration for many women. Not only are the results subtler, but if you have rippling of the breast implant, it will be better concealed. This is especially important for women with little breast tissue. Because the breast implant is partly supported by the pectoral muscle, there is less overall sagging, though the natural breast may sag more than the implant. Because the breast implant is not actually in the breast, there is less interference with breast exams and mammograms, which may mean easier detection of suspicious lesions. Finally, placement of breast implants under the muscle is associated with a significantly lower risk of capsular contracture, a potential complication of breast augmentation.
