Dermatology, Cosmetic and Plastic Surgery in New York City (NYC) and Manhattan
Chin implants are designed to provide definition in your jawline and improve balance in the lower third of your facial profile. In recent years, chin augmentation has become an increasingly popular way to enhance facial appearance, since a more defined chin can improve many of your other facial features in turn – including the nose and neckline. Some patients choose to combine chin implants with neck liposuction and/or rhinoplasty to achieve the best possible results.

Chin Implant Candidates
If you have a receding or undersized chin that is compromising the overall appearance of your face, chin implants may be an excellent solution for you. Good chin implant candidates should:
- Be in strong physical health – The better your general health is, the easier your recovery process will be. If you smoke, you will need to quit for at least two weeks before your surgery to ensure safe healing.
- Have realistic expectations about the procedure – Using digital imaging and other visualization methods, your surgeon will help you understand what chin implants can accomplish in your unique case.
- Prepared for the recovery process – Swelling and bruising in the chin area is normal during the first few days. Any discomfort can be controlled with over-the-counter pain medication. Most patients can return to work within a week, and resume regular exercise in two weeks.
Our experienced New York plastic surgeon will thoroughly examine your facial structure, skin, and soft tissues to recommend the best combination of techniques for your needs. Chin implants come in several different sizes and shapes; we will help you select the right one depending on the look you want to achieve. If necessary, we can carve the chin implant to further customize its shape in order to match your jaw anatomy.
The Chin Augmentation Procedure
Chin implant surgery is usually performed under local anesthesia and can be done with or without sedation. The procedure can be completed in about one hour. A tapered silicone implant will be inserted through a small incision beneath your chin, allowing it to lie directly on the bone. The scar ends up being virtually invisible.
Once the chin implant is in place, your surgeon will use small sutures to close the incision, and tapes will be placed beneath your chin in order to reduce swelling. Any sutures placed within your mouth will dissolve after about a week, and sutures on the outside of your chin will be removed after a week as well. Your results will be noticeable immediately, and will continue to improve as you heal.
Chin Augmentation Recovery
After chin augmentation, you can return home on the same day with the help of a friend or family member. You can expect some mild bruising and swelling, especially in the lower face and neck. These issues gradually resolve after 7 to 10 days. We suggest you take about a week off work after your procedure in order to facilitate proper healing. However, some patients are able to return to work after 3 or 4 days.
Light exercise can be continued in a few weeks following your chin implant procedure, while more strenuous exercise should be avoided for at least four to six weeks. We will closely follow up with you throughout the recovery process to ensure you are healing normally, and to advise you when it is safe to return to certain activities.
