Dermatology, Cosmetic and Plastic Surgery in New York City (NYC) and Manhattan
When first invented, people imagined lasers would be used as weapons, but like so many predictions the exact opposite has turned out to be true. Laser technology has been turned to numerous medical applications, allowing us to heal specific dermatology and aesthetic conditions in ways that were undreamed of just a few short years ago. This is because lasers are precise and specific, allowing them to target just one type or color of tissue. Because Juva Skin and Laser is one of the largest laser centers in the world, we have a wide assortment of many of the latest developments in laser technology that allows us to provide custom treatment designed for your skin and your condition.
This page describes some of the basic types of lasers and what they're generally used for, but the best laser for your treatment can be determined only in a personal consultation. Please call 212-688-JUVA (5882) or email us today to schedule your appointment at our central Manhattan office.
Types of Lasers
A laser emits a concentrated beam of light at a specific wavelength determined by the material used to produce the laser. The wavelength can be thought of as the "color" of the laser, though some laser light is outside the visible range. The specific color of the laser determines the color of tissue it targets. The types of lasers we use include:
- Pulsed dye
We also use some non-laser devices, including:
- Broadband light (BBL)
- Intense Pulsed Light
- Radiofrequency (RF)
We'll talk about the uses of each type of laser and give examples below.
Diode lasers use semiconductor circuits to produce laser energy. Think of it as a ramped-up version of the LED flashlight. We use them for laser hair removal and cellulite treatment. Diode lasers we use include:
ND: YAG Lasers
Nd:YAG is short for neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet, the type of crystal that is used as the lasing medium for these lasers. We use them for vein treatment, laser tattoo removal, Laser Hair Removal, Smartlipo, and treatment of nail fungus. Nd:YAG lasers in our office include:
- Cynergy 1064
- Affinity QS 532/1064
- Apogee (also an alexandrite laser)
Alexandrite lasers use synthetic alexandrite as the lasing medium. They are very useful in laser tattoo removal because they can target green ink, and can be used to treat dermal pigmented lesions and sun or age spots. Alexandrite lasers we use include:
- Accolade QS 755
- Apogee (also an ND:YAG laser)
CO2 lasers were among the first used for cosmetic skin treatment. They are still commonly used for laser skin resurfacing, laser skin tightening, and the treatment of sun damage. CO2 lasers we use include:
- Smart Xide DOT
- Smartskin CO2
Pulsed Dye Lasers
Pulsed dye lasers use short-intense bursts of laser light from a liquid lasing medium. They are very useful in treating vascular lesions and spider veins and for laser scar treatment as well as stretch mark removal. We use the following pulsed dye lasers:
- Cynergy 595
- Candela V-Beam
Erbium lasers use a different type of YAG crystal to produce laser light in the infrared range, like CO2 lasers. They are also used for skin resurfacing, but they're gentler than CO2 lasers. We use the Pixel erbium laser.
Excimer lasers are often described as "cool" lasers. They have wavelengths in the ultraviolet range and are useful for treating psoriasis and vitiligo. We use the X Trac excimer laser.
In addition to lasers, we have the following light treatment tools:
- E-Matrix (RF)
- Exilis (RF)
- Accent (RF)
- Blu U Light (for photodynamic therapy (PDT)
- Gentlewaves LED
- Harmony IPL
- Harmony 570 and 540 (blue light)
- Omnilux LED
The radiofrequency tools are used for a variety of treatments, from skin tightening to hair removal. LEDs and IPLs are used for noninvasive treatment alternatives to laser treatment.
A Tool Is Only as Good as the Hand That Wields It
We are very proud of our assortment of laser technologies because they allow us to give customized treatment to many different types of skin problems. However, it is the skill of our dermatologists and staff that truly distinguishes Juva Skin and Laser Center from other practices in Manhattan.
