If you have large, protruding ears that you feel are compromising your overall appearance, otoplasty can help improve your self-esteem and quality of life. Ear correction is often performed on small children ages 5 and up who are the subject of teasing and ridicule because of their ears.
Whether you are an adult seeking otoplasty, or you are considering this procedure for your child, we can help you make an informed decision.

What Can Otoplasty Correct?
Otoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to:
- Reposition protruding ears closer to the head
- Define weak folds in the ears
- Reshape the ears
- Reduce ear size
If you are considering ear correction for your child, make sure they are allowed to have input on the decision. It’s important for children to be involved in the choice to move forward with otoplasty.
Good candidates for otoplasty are at least 5 years old, in strong overall health, and have realistic expectations about what the procedure can accomplish.
The Otoplasty Procedure
Our New York plastic surgeon can perform otoplasty under local anesthesia with a sedative (for adults) or general anesthesia (for children). The procedure itself can take anywhere from one to two hours, depending on the extent of the surgery. An incision will be made behind each ear to access the cartilage for reshaping. Once the ears have been properly repositioned, a bandage will be placed over them to facilitate proper healing.
Several different otoplasty techniques can be used to reshape your ears. During your consultation, we will take plenty of time to discuss your expectations, goals, and concerns about ear correction surgery. You can trust us to recommend the right method for you based on the results you’re looking for, and your individual physical characteristics.
Immediately after otoplasty, you may experience some amount of mild discomfort, but this can be controlled with medication. You will need to wear a post-operative bandage for the first few days following surgery. Within 10 to 20 days after surgery, the ears should begin to look “normal.” However, it may take up to six weeks for healing to complete. Children usually need to wait around a week before returning to school.
By considering all of your facial features into account before surgery, we can provide you with an ear correction procedure that complements your individual personality and enhances your overall appearance.
