What Causes Visible Veins
We all know that veins are important, that they carry blood back to the heart so it can be re-oxygenated, but we want them to do their job as out of sight as possible. In fact, when veins become visible, it generally means they aren't doing their job. Spider veins and varicose veins are a result of venous insufficiency, when blood in veins gets "backed up" and isn't being carried back to the heart.
Veins have little one-way valves that are supposed to help the blood get back to the heart. When these valves wear down, they do not perform as well and blood accumulates in the veins. The stagnant blood gets darker in color, making the veins more visible. When this involves smaller veins that are visible but not generally painful or raised, it is called spider veins. When it involves larger veins that become raised or painful, it is described as varicose veins.
Vein Treatment Options
Fortunately, visible veins such as spider veins or varicose veins, along with burst blood vessels and vascular lesions, can all be treated in a number of ways.
Laser vein treatment is one of the most flexible and noninvasive treatment options. We have several lasers that can be used to target purple spider veins as well as red or purple vascular lesions and burst blood vessels. Depending on the size and nature of the veins to be treated, multiple sessions may be required for optimal results.
Sclerotherapy involves injections of a specific chemical into the affected veins, causing them to constrict. Your body then naturally removes them. We utilize a newly-approved formula called Asclera, which has several advantages over previous sclerotherapy formulas.
Ambulatory phlebectomy, a minimally invasive surgical procedure, is sometimes recommended for the most serious varicose veins.
