3 Ways to Prevent Sun Damage | Manhattan, New York CityYour skin is the largest organ you have. It’s important to protect your skin to both keep your youthful look and prevent sun damage from causing skin discoloration and skin cancer. JUVA Skin & Laser Center offers a variety of laser skin resurfacing treatments to reverse damage from sun exposure, but there are ways to avoid long-term harm.

Our dermatologist, Dr. Bruce Katz, has a few tips to keep your skin looking healthy and vibrant including:

1. Wear Sunscreen.

Sunscreen is a vital part of preventing sun damage. You’ve undoubtedly heard this many times before, but skin care is often forgotten in the excitement of a day at the pool, on the lake or at the park. The best sunscreens have ingredients such as zinc, titanium dioxide, avobenzone and an SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of 30.

The Non-Paba Moisturizing Sunscreen is one of the products we recommend. It is oil-free and works well with skin prone to acne. If you’re looking for an even tan, but want to keep your skin intact, this sunscreen is one of your best choices.

2. Avoid Extreme Sun Exposure.

Overzealous sun exposure causes your body to produce irregular melanin and leads to dark spots, wrinkles and an uneven skin texture. The sun is at its highest intensity between the hours of 10am and 2pm. Avoid being in the sun during these hours to protect your skin. Stay in the shade as much as you can.

3. Cover Sensitive Skin.

If you must be in the sun during peak hours or have sensitive skin, cover up as best you can. This can be difficult on especially hot days, but staying in the shade can keep you cool, and wearing light colors can stop you from becoming overheated.

You can protect your skin by following all of Dr. Katz’s tips, but if you’re already experiencing signs of sun damage, we can develop a customized laser treatment plan for you.
