Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck surgery) can be approached in a number of different ways. Our board-certified NYC plastic surgeon will tailor your procedure to meet your specific needs as a patient. After carefully evaluating your condition and discussing your cosmetic goals, our plastic surgeon will recommend the type of tummy tuck he believes is right for you.

There are three main types of tummy tucks:

  1. Mini (partial) tummy tuck - If you only need skin tightening below the navel, a mini tummy tuck may be ideal for you. It uses a single incision above the pubic area; the length of the incision will depend on how much excess skin must be removed, and the scar can be easily hidden by clothing, including swimsuits.
  2. Complete tummy tuck - A full, standard tummy tuck addresses the entire abdomen. This requires two incisions: one above the pubic area (similar to a mini tummy tuck), and one around the belly button, ensuring your surgeon can access the higher abdominal muscles for tightening, as well as the lower muscles.
  3. Extended tummy tuck - Candidates who have a significant amount of hanging skin in the love handle area may be interested in an extended tummy tuck for the best results. This procedure uses the same basic approach as a complete tummy tuck, but the pubic incision is extended over your hips to allow removal of excess skin in the waist and hip areas.

Other procedures may be combined with your tummy tuck to ensure you meet your cosmetic goals. For example, an outer thigh lift is sometimes performed in conjunction with an extended tummy tuck, and liposuction can be used with all three types of tummy tucks to further improve your new contours.
