How BOTOX-Type Injectables Work
Years of repeated facial movements eventually leave their mark on your skin. As the muscles in your face move to form expressions, your skin gets stretched and pressed against itself. Creases, lines, and folds will inevitably form over areas of high muscle activity.
For example, folds can develop around the sides of your mouth from smiling. Fine lines can creep up near the outer corners of your eyes due to squinting. These signs of aging may look almost imperceptible at first, but they will become more deeply set and permanent over time.
BOTOX and other comparable prescription medicines smooth and soften wrinkles at the source. These FDA-approved substances utilize a purified protein called Botulinum Toxin Type A to block the transmissions of nerve signals to your muscles temporarily. Limiting the activity of specific muscles allows your skin to relax, reducing the appearance of facial wrinkles and preventing new wrinkles from forming.
Keep in mind that BOTOX and similar products are not the same as fillers. While both are cosmetic injectables, they work differently. Fillers are gel-like substances designed to add volume beneath the surface of the skin. Fillers and BOTOX generally work well together, so our experienced team may suggest combining them as part of your individualized treatment plan.
The Benefits of BOTOX and other Neurotoxins
There’s a reason why BOTOX and other comparable injections are the most common cosmetic treatments performed today. In fact, there are a lot of reasons. BOTOX-type injectables offer significant benefits such as:
- Fast and painless injection sessions
- No downtime or recovery
- Addresses multiple signs of aging
- Can reduce excessive sweating
- Results appear quickly
- Results last for 3-4 months without maintenance
- Treatments can be repeated on your schedule
Both men and women rely on BOTOX and BOTOX-type injectables to look and feel their best. These products may help boost your confidence and give you a competitive edge in both social situations and the workplace.
Age-Related Concerns That BOTOX-Type Injectables Treat
BOTOX and other neurotoxins can fade wrinkles to rejuvenate your appearance. In addition to giving you a more youthful look, they can make your expression look less severe and concerned. By smoothing your skin, these products help you appear vibrant and refreshed.
The following areas and concerns are commonly treated with BOTOX-type injectables:
- Horizontal forehead creases
- Vertical lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines, “elevens,” or “frown lines)
- Wrinkles around the eyes (“crow’s feet”)
- Above the lips (“lipstick lines” or “smoker’s lines”)
- Creases on the nose bridge (“bunny lines”)
- Prominent vertical neck bands
BOTOX for Excessive Sweating
In addition to treating lines and wrinkles, BOTOX is approved by the FDA to treat excessive underarm sweating. It’s normal to sweat a little. However, excessive sweating, or hyperhidrosis, can interfere with your daily life. You may find yourself perspiring without an apparent reason, such as heat, nervousness, or physical activity.
Many people report that their excessive underarm sweat makes them feel embarrassed. Underarm sweat tends to soak through clothes, leaving visible sweat marks. To avoid that situation, you may resign yourself to wearing black or dark clothing every day.
If you are one of the millions of people who suffer from excessive sweating, BOTOX may be the solution. In the armpits, BOTOX works by blocking the effects of a chemical that stimulates the sweat duct that causes perspiration. By injecting BOTOX into the skin, perspiration in the treatment area is reduced or eliminated.
The results last for four to six months. The session can be repeated to maintain your results. Say goodbye to ineffective antiperspirants and hello to light-colored tops!
Ideal Candidates for These Injectables
At JUVA, our staff is committed to helping you understand your options for skin rejuvenation. Our experienced team can determine if BOTOX or a similar treatment is right for you during an in-person consultation. We will happily determine whether these injectables will work for you or if a different approach is better suited to your unique needs.
Generally speaking, you may be an ideal candidate for BOTOX, Dysport, and other neuromodulators if:
- You are 18 or older
- You are not currently pregnant
- You do not have a history of adverse reactions to the treatment
- You are looking for a safe, effective, and minimally-invasive cosmetic solution
Our dermatologists will need to discuss your medical conditions and relevant medical history to ensure that these treatments are appropriate. We make our decisions based on strict medical criteria. Having said that, most patients turn out to be excellent candidates for BOTOX-type treatment.
The Difference Between BOTOX, Dysport, Xeomin, and Jeuveau
Today, there are four FDA-approved injectable neurotoxins: BOTOX, Dysport, Xeomin, and Jeuveau. We proudly carry all four options at JUVA. However, patients frequently ask us what the difference is between these products.
BOTOX is the most well-known brand name when it comes to neurotoxins. It’s the number one selling product in this category. Additionally, it was the first product of its kind to receive FDA approval for aesthetic purposes back in 2002.
Since then, several comparable options have hit the market. These options are Dysport, Xeomin, and Jeuveau. Jeuveau, which rhymes with “hello,” is the newest product. It received FDA-approval in 2019. This injectable is unique because it was developed exclusively for aesthetic use, whereas products like BOTOX have medical applications. These products are very similar; however, they are produced by separate companies and differ in some aspects.
- How They Work: At their core, these prescription medicines rely on the same principle of using Botulinum toxin type A to limit muscle activity. The injection appointments are nearly identical. Moreover, the products tend to offer similar results and longevity.
- Ingredients: These products are derived from different strains of the same toxin. In terms of formula, BOTOX, Dysport, and Jeuveau contain the active neurotoxin as well as complex proteins. These proteins are believed to protect the neurotoxin and facilitate absorption.
Conversely, Xeomin does not contain complex proteins or additives. For that reason, it is referred to as a “stripped down” or “naked” injectable. The body is less likely to have an adverse reaction to Xeomin than other formulas because of its purity.
- Manufacturing: There are additional differences in the manufacturing process used to create these products. For example, Jeuveau is produced using a trademarked purification method called Hi-Pure.
These neurotoxins may have a slightly different onset, meaning the time it takes for results to appear. Additionally, they vary from each other in terms of dosing units. If you usually receive 20 units of BOTOX, you won’t necessarily need 20 units of a different injectable.
Finding the right wrinkle relaxer for you is often a matter of personal preference. Our skilled injectors will discuss your concerns, goals, and relevant medical history to steer you toward the ideal injectable for your situation.
What to Expect During Your Treatment
Treatments with BOTOX or a similar injectable neurotoxin are generally quick and comfortable. These products are administered below the surface of the skin using a very small needle. Once injected into the targeted muscle, the formula begins to relax it and temporarily reduce its movement.
You may feel a mild pinching sensation during the injection process. You may choose to have a topical anesthetic applied to the treatment area, but many people find that this is unnecessary as the treatment is quite tolerable. The duration of your session depends on the number of areas you wish to treat and the units being administered. It usually takes less than five minutes to treat each area.
After your appointment, you may experience mild redness and swelling at the injection site. Occasionally, patients may experience slight bruising that can be covered with makeup. Life doesn't slow down in New York City, making this zero-downtime procedure an ideal choice that can keep up with your busy lifestyle. Most patients begin to see noticeable results within several hours to several days, with the most noticeable change appearing after roughly two weeks.
How Long Do BOTOX-Type Injections Last?
Generally, optimal results from products like BOTOX, Dysport, Xeomin, and Jeuveau tend to last up to three or four months. From there, the results of the treatment will fade gradually.
If you want to maintain your original outcome, our injectors can administer follow-up injections. Ask about creating a treatment schedule tailored around your unique needs.
The Cost of BOTOX and Similar Treatments
Like many aesthetic treatments, the cost of BOTOX, Dysport, Xeomin, and Jeuveau tends to vary significantly between patients. The primary factor that affects the price is the number of units needed to achieve your goals. This can be impacted by the areas you wish to treat and the strength of the targeted muscles.
Before you receive any injections, our team will provide you with an estimated treatment cost. Be sure to keep an eye on the specials page on our website for additional savings.
