Hair loss and thinning is incredibly common. In fact, studies indicate that most men begin to experience thinning of the hair around age 35. By age 50, an estimated 95% of men will have some sort of significant hair loss or thinning. But women are not immune. According to the American Hair Loss Association, women comprise 40% of hair loss sufferers in our country. If you are among these – be you male or female – our New York City dermatologists can help. With personalized and science-driven treatments, we can help stop hair from thinning, and even assist in the growth of new hair.

Causes of Hair Loss
There can be many factors that contribute to hair loss. Among these are chronic disease or illness, certain medications, and malnutrition. However, among both men and women, the leading cause of baldness is heredity.
Androgenetic alopecia, more commonly known as female or male pattern baldness, is linked to Dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a testosterone derivative whose production is primarily governed by your genes. Research indicates that DHT binds to receptors in scalp follicles, in turn shrinking the follicles of the hair and making it difficult for healthy, thick hair to regenerate.
Even people without androgenetic alopecia are constantly shedding hair. For women and men with excess DHT or other hair-loss conditions, that loss is not countered by new hair production. To stem the loss of hair and stimulate new hair growth, our NYC dermatologists offer a combination of platelet rich plasma therapy (PRP) and microneedling, along with Viviscal, a non-pharmaceutical medication that has been shown to promote the production of healthy hair follicles.
About our Hair Loss Treatments
Platelet rich plasma therapy uses your own plasma to stimulate hair growth. With this process, our experienced dermatologists can isolate both growth factors and platelets from your blood, and reintroduce them to the scalp where they are highly effective at stimulating hair regeneration.
PRP is often performed in conjunction with microneedling – a process during which very small needles are used to create minor trauma to the skin in order to promote the production of collagen and elastin. Because these proteins are necessary for nourishing hair follicles, they can serve to support the platelets and growth factors from your plasma and enhance your hair growth results. While PRP can be performed without microneedling, our Manhattan dermatologists have found the two treatments work in ideal conjunction to optimize the regrowth of hair.
PRP and microneedling are often supported by vitamins and haircare products from Viviscal. For over 20 years, Viviscal has been studying both hair loss and the safest, most effective ways to help hair grow. Backed by scientific data and solid research, the products offered by Viviscal work to provide essential nourishment to the scalp and hair follicles, helping add volume to the hair. Viviscal products are available without PRP and microneedling, but typically work best when combined.
For patients whose hair loss is primarily isolated to the hair-line, a process called micropigmentation may be ideal. Micropigmentation, also known as medical hairline tattooing, uses natural pigments to imitate the appearance of hair strands along the hair line. This process can also be used to address bald spots caused by scars or burns, making it effective even on those areas where hair growth cannot be stimulated.
