What is liposuction?

Liposuction is a surgical procedure for reducing or eliminating localized fat deposits. It is a body contouring procedure, not a weight loss method.

Am I a candidate for liposuction?

The ideal candidate for liposuction is:

  • At or near goal weight
  • In good general health
  • Has localized fat deposits not responsive to diet and exercise
  • Willing to research the procedure’s benefits and risks

In addition, patients should have realistic expectations for results from the procedure. The best way to learn whether you are a candidate for liposuction is to get a personal evaluation. Please call JUVA Skin & Laser Center in central Manhattan at (888) 610-3133 for your evaluation.

How does liposuction work?

The first step in liposuction is the injection of a fluid into the treatment area. This fluid contains a local anesthetic that narrows blood vessels. Small incisions are used to insert a small hollow tube, called a cannula, into fat deposits. Suction is applied to the fat deposit through the cannula, removing some of the fat. When the desired amount of fat is removed, the area is dressed and compression garment applied.

How is SmartLipo different from traditional liposuction?

Laser-Assisted Liposuction - SmartLipo by CynosureSmartLipo adds laser energy to traditional liposuction procedures. The laser in SmartLipo offers two benefits. First, the laser breaks up fat cells, making them easier to remove with less incidental trauma to other tissues in the area, such as nerves and blood vessels. This reduces discomfort, reduces bleeding, and shortens liposuction recovery time. The laser energy also stimulates a healing response in the skin, resulting in tighter skin over the treatment area.

SmartLipo’s benefits are clear, and have convinced us there is no longer any reason to use traditional liposuction. We use SmartLipo for all our patients.

Is liposuction safe?

Horror stories about liposuction gone wrong make big headlines, but the truth is that when performed by a board-certified dermatologist or plastic surgeon in an accredited facility, liposuction is a very safe procedure. Hundreds of thousands of people undergo liposuction every year with few serious incidents. This is not to say the procedure is risk-free. Please see liposuction risks for more information.

Does liposuction leave scars?

Any time the skin is cut, there will be a scar, but the scars from liposuction are so small they are barely detectable. We will give you postoperative instructions that will help your scars become as subtle as possible after the procedure.
