Some people think that acne is an unwanted cosmetic condition that only occurs during puberty. The truth is that acne can also affect adults well into their 30s, 40s, and even 50s. It’s even possible to get through puberty with clear skin only to experience acne for the first time as an adult. No matter your age, you may have noticed that active acne can be difficult to treat.

At JUVA Skin & Laser Center, we know that acne can be frustrating and that it often has a negative impact on self-esteem and self-confidence. You deserve clear, even skin that you will want to show off to the world.

We offer a variety of treatments to help you improve the appearance of your skin. If you are struggling with acne, please call 888-610-3133 today to schedule a consultation with our experienced dermatologists. We happily welcome patients from Manhattan, Woodside, NYC, and worldwide.

What is Active Acne?

Active acne can occur on the face and the body. As the name suggests, active acne is a current and potentially ongoing skin issue. Active acne is different from hyperpigmentation or acne scars that can be left behind when blemishes fade.

Active acne statisticsTypes of acne include:

  • Whiteheads: These are small blemishes with a white appearance.

  • Blackheads: Blemishes that are characterized by the appearance of tiny black dots.

  • Papules: This is the stage after whiteheads where there is likely inflammation but no visible white areas.

  • Pustules: This form of acne may be painful to the touch and tempting to pop, but you should avoid any squeezing action that could leave you with a scar.

  • Nodules and cysts: These are more severe forms of acne and have the potential to damage your skin.

The source of active acne can often be traced back to overactive oil glands, a buildup of dead skin cells, and/or an overgrowth of the bacteria that can cause breakouts. Antibiotics and over the counter medicines may not always be effective when it comes to treating stubborn acne.

Fractora

Microneedling on its own is an effective treatment that creates tiny dots in your skin to speed up the cell renewal process. Fractora combines microneedling with fractionated radiofrequency energy, which encourages collagen production through the use of gentle heat. The treatment delivers beneficial energy into multiple, targeted layers of your skin through small pins in order to reduce the appearance of acne and treat acne scars at the same time.

Fractora treatments are very customizable, as different areas of the face and different depths can be targeted to help achieve your aesthetic goals. And you can choose from either a more aggressive treatment session or several mild sessions that need to be performed more frequently. It only takes roughly 20 minutes to treat the entire face, and results can often be seen after one treatment.

Photodynamic therapy

Photodynamic therapy can improve a wide range of acne concerns. The process involves activating a topical medication with a special light-based skin treatment. The first step is to coat the skin with a medication called Levulan® (aminolevulinic acid HCl) that is absorbed by your oil glands and skin bacteria. The drug is then activated using a gentle laser to effectively kill acne-causing bacteria and shrink the size of your oil glands.

The treatment is painless and the results are long-lasting. To experience the best results, the treatment should be performed 5-6 times at two-week intervals. Your skin will temporarily be more sensitive to the sun after treatment, so you will need to wear a sunscreen for several days after a photodynamic therapy session.

NeoClear by Aerolase

The FDA-approved NeoClear by Aerolase laser can effectively treat active acne and acne scarring. And while having clear skin today is great, maintaining clear skin into the future is even better. This laser treatment actually decreases the chance that your acne will return in the future.

Using innovative micro-pulse technology, the laser energy delivers rapid heating action to the areas where acne bacteria thrive. There is no need to cool the skin during the tolerable treatment, and the handpiece will not come into contact with your face or body. The wavelength of the light also improves collagen production, which in turn improves the tone and texture of your skin.
