You may be considering a tummy tuck in order to remove excess skin from your abdominal area, but aren't sure of all the details. The information below can be utilized to help you make an informed decision and determine if you'd like to have a tummy tuck performed by our New York Plastic Surgeon.
What Is a Tummy Tuck?
A tummy tuck is also known as abdominoplasty. It is a cosmetic surgery procedure that can help rid your body of excess skin, fat, and stretch marks in your abdominal area. It can be performed to help you have a firmer stomach and better overall appearance.
What Is the Difference Between a Complete Tummy Tuck and a Mini-Tummy Tuck?
A complete tummy tuck involves removing excess skin and fat from both above and below your belly button. It usually involves an incision that runs along your pelvic area between your hip bones, and may require an incision around your belly button as well. After the removal of fat and excess skin, your abdominal muscles will be tightened and your navel will be repositioned for an optimal look.
A mini-tummy tuck only involves the removal of excess skin and fat from the area below your navel. Because of this, it doesn't involve replacing your navel and is less-invasive. A mini-tummy tuck only requires an incision that runs along your bikini line. Just as in a complete tummy-tuck, your skin will be pulled back so that excess fat and skin can be removed. Your affected abdominal muscles will also be tightened after the skin is removed.
Am I a Good Candidate for a Tummy Tuck?
You are a good candidate for a tummy tuck if you have excess skin on your abdomen that can't be tightened with exercise. After pregnancy, many women have a large amount of excess skin leftover. Excess skin forms in both women and men when they experience a vast amount of weight loss, leaving behind a large amount of hanging excess skin. Good candidates for a tummy tuck should have a stable weight and be in good overall health.
How Long Is the Recovery Time After a Tummy Tuck?
After a mini-tummy tuck, most patients can return home on the same day as the procedure. You should expect to be away from work for 1-2 weeks following a mini-tummy tuck and will wear a compression garment for several weeks to aid in the healing process. You can walk and do some light activities soon after your procedure.
Following a full tummy tuck procedure, you will be able to return home on the same day as your surgery. Our New York plastic surgeon will place drainage tubes during the procedure that must stay in-place for 3-7 days. You can return to work 7-14 days after the procedure, but we recommend waiting the full 14 days to allow your body time to heal. You will need to wear a compression garment for several weeks following a full tummy tuck and can return to light activity within a week following the surgery.
