Before & After Laser Hair Removal

How do I Prepare for Laser Hair Removal?

At JUVA Skin & Laser Center, we’re committed to delivering the best possible results with laser hair removal in NYC. We want you to enjoy a safe, comfortable experience that leaves you with delightfully smooth and hairless skin. In order to help us deliver the best results, it’s important that you take the following steps before treatment:

  • Refrain from tanning for several weeks prior to your treatment. This will allow for the greatest difference in pigmentation between your hair and skin, which will optimize the effectiveness of the laser. Always wear sunscreen, long-sleeved shirts, pants, and a wide-brimmed hat whenever you’re outside for two weeks before treatment to minimize sun exposure.
  • Don’t use any bronzers or spray-on tanning products the week before laser hair removal. There are metallic ingredients in these spray products which can cause burn injuries.
  • Shave the treatment area before your appointment. This should be done either the night before or the morning of your laser hair removal appointment. Shaving prior to your appointment will minimize the treatment time.
  • Avoid waxing or tweezing unwanted hair before your treatment, or in between treatments. While shaving is encouraged right before your appointment, it’s important that you avoid other hair removal methods for at least two weeks prior to your treatment.
  • Let us know about any medications or supplements you are taking. Certain prescription drugs or dietary supplements may need to be discontinued for at least a week before your treatment.
  • Don’t wear makeup to your laser hair removal session. Wearing makeup can make it harder for the laser to detect the pigment in your hair.

What Can I Expect During the Procedure?

When you arrive for your laser hair removal treatment, you may need to get undressed, depending on which area you’re having treated. You will be given protective goggles, and the area to be treated will be cleansed with wipes. We apply a numbing cream in the area to be treated so there is almost no discomfort. If you have stray hairs in the area, they will be shaved, and the laser portion will begin. The majority of patients are relatively comfortable during treatment and describe the feeling of the laser as a “hot rubber band” being snapped on their skin.

The Vectus Laser

One of the lasers we use at JUVA Skin & Laser Center is the Vectus® laser, which is considered to be the least painful laser treatment available for hair removal. It has been recognized for several other benefits when compared to other lasers, including:

  • Treats the widest range of skin types
  • Eliminates many side effects and offers the lowest complications
  • Most comfortable laser available for patients
  • Gets rid of hair quickly in larger areas, such as the back
  • Requires fewer treatment sessions
  • No downtime required after treatment

The Skintel Melanin Reader

We also use the Skintel® Melanin Reader, a tool that’s used in conjunction with Vectus to accurately measure the melanin (pigment) in your skin.

Before the Skintel Melanin Reader, there wasn’t a truly accurate way to determine the pigment density in the skin and hair follicles. The Skintel Melanin Reader is able to quickly measure the patient’s melanin, providing our specialists with the very best understanding of the patient’s skin tone and its threshold for laser energy. We are able to achieve remarkable precision with the Skintel reader and deliver remarkable, highly predictable results with less risk of side effects.

Recovery

After your laser hair removal in NYC with our team, you may use aloe vera to soothe any areas that may feel hot. To heal properly and get the best results, it’s best to avoid the following until you are advised otherwise:

  • Sun exposure
  • Other skin treatments
  • Puncturing the skin
  • Anything that makes you sweat (exercise, saunas, baths, etc.)
  • Removing any hair growth
  • Very hot water
  • Makeup or perfume near the treated area

Results

  • You will begin a “hair shedding” process a few days following treatment
  • The hairs that fall out will regrow much weaker, and will then shed again
  • They will regrow finer and finer until they stop growing completely

Laser Hair Removal FAQ

How does laser hair removal work?

When the laser is introduced to the hair follicle, the pigment within the follicle absorbs the light energy of the laser beam. This raises the temperature of the hair follicle until the cells that are responsible for hair regrowth are destroyed, and therefore lose their ability to grow hair.

How Many Laser Hair Removal Treatments are Needed?

Everyone has different skin and hair, so the amount of sessions needed to achieve the desired results will always be different. Another thing to consider is that hair grows in phases, which means that not all the hair follicles will be “ready” to be affected by the laser because some of them will be in a “resting” phase. For all the hair follicles to be affected, approximately 4-6 treatments are needed.

Are there any side effects or risks associated with laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal typically has minimal side effects, such as temporary redness or swelling, which usually subside within a few hours.

How does the cost of laser hair removal compare to other hair removal methods in the long run?

While laser hair removal may have a higher upfront cost, it often proves cost-effective in the long run as it offers long-lasting results, reducing the need for ongoing expenses on razors, waxing, or depilatory creams. The financial benefit becomes more apparent over time as the need for frequent maintenance diminishes with successful laser treatments.
