Rhinoplasty (nose surgery) does not have a set series of steps, since each operation is fully customized for the unique anatomy and goals of the patient. However, there are two main approaches to rhinoplasty: a closed procedure, where incisions are made inside of the nose, and an open procedure, where a small external incision is made at the base of the nose (between the nostrils).
During the Rhinoplasty Procedure
Depending on the complexity of your rhinoplasty procedure, local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia may be used. During your initial consultation, our plastic surgeon will recommend the type of anesthesia that would be best in your case.
The rhinoplasty procedure itself can take anywhere between one to three hours. The underlying bone or cartilage in your nose will be carefully adjusted, trimmed, and/or augmented to create a new shape.
After Rhinoplasty Surgery
Once your procedure is complete, you will be taken to a recovery room, where we will monitor you until it is safe for you to leave. Patients are able to leave the same day of their surgery.
Once you are home, you should rest in bed with your head raised higher than your chest to minimize swelling and bleeding. Your nose will probably feel congested due to swelling, and because of the cotton packed inside of your nose during surgery. The splint and bandages on your nose will need to remain in place for about a week.
To ensure a smooth recovery process:
- Avoid aerobics, jogging, and other strenuous physical activities.
- Do not swim.
- Do not lift anything that weighs over 20 pounds.
- Do not bend down from your waist without bending or flexing your knees.
- Do not rest sunglasses or eyeglasses on your nose for at least six weeks after surgery.
Although you should be able to return to work within 7 days, complete recovery from rhinoplasty is a gradual process. As swelling continues to go down, your results will be slowly be revealed. If extensive changes were made to your nasal structure, your body may take longer to completely adjust.
