Botox and Alternative Injectable Neurotoxins in NYC

Botox® and Botox alternatives (other types of neurotoxins) are a great way to renew your appearance without undergoing surgery. These non-invasive treatments are administered quickly and require no downtime, making it very easy to incorporate them into your anti-aging routine. If you’re seeking wrinkle treatment in NYC, JUVA Skin & Laser can help.

Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, and Jeuveau

If you’re starting to notice fine lines and wrinkles aging your face, one of our effective wrinkle treatment injectables can restore your youthful appearance. Millions of satisfied patients receive Botulinum toxin type A every year. You may recognize these treatments by the well-known brand names Botox, Dysport®, Xeomin®, and Jeuveau®.

Concerns that Botox-type injectables treat

Not only can Botox and other neurotoxins fade wrinkles to rejuvenate your appearance and give you a more youthful look; they can also help make your expression look less severe and/or concerned. By smoothing your skin, these products help you appear vibrant and refreshed.

The following areas and concerns are commonly treated with Botox-type injectables:

  • Horizontal forehead creases
  • Vertical lines between the eyebrows (“angry elevens”)
  • Wrinkles around the eyes (“crow’s feet”)
  • Lines above the lips (“lipstick lines” or “smoker’s lines”)
  • Creases on the nose bridge (“bunny lines”)
  • Prominent vertical neck bands

What causes wrinkles?

Years of repeated facial movements eventually leave their mark on your skin. As the muscles in your face move to form expressions, your skin stretches and presses against itself. This leads to creases, lines, and folds that will eventually form over areas of high muscle activity.

For example, folds can develop around the sides of your mouth from smiling. Fine lines can creep up near the outer corners of your eyes due to squinting. These signs of aging may look almost imperceptible at first, but they will inevitably become more deeply set — and permanent — over time.

Key benefits of Botox and other neurotoxins

Both men and women rely on Botox and Botox-type injectables to look and feel their best. There’s a reason why Botox and other neurotoxins are some of the most popular wrinkle treatments in NYC. In fact, there are a lot of reasons. Botox-type injectables offer significant benefits such as:

  • Fast and painless injections
  • No downtime or recovery
  • Address multiple signs of aging at once
  • Can reduce excessive sweating
  • Results appear quickly
  • Results last for 3 to 4 months without maintenance
  • Treatments can be repeated on your schedule

How Botox-type injectables work as a wrinkle treatment

Botox and other neurotoxins smooth and soften wrinkles at the source. These FDA approved substances utilize a purified protein called Botulinum Toxin Type A to block the transmissions of nerve signals to your muscles temporarily. Limiting the activity of specific muscles allows your skin to relax, reducing the appearance of facial wrinkles and preventing new ones from forming.

What’s the difference between neurotoxins and dermal fillers?

Keep in mind that Botox and other neurotoxins are not the same as dermal fillers. While both are cosmetic injectables that work as a wrinkle treatment, they work very differently. Dermal fillers are gel-like substances designed to add volume beneath the surface of the skin by actually filling it. Botox and other neurotoxins work by blocking nerve signals. However, dermal fillers and neurotoxins generally work well together, so our specialists may suggest combining them as part of your personalized treatment plan. It will depend on your specific areas of concern and aesthetic goals.

Botox for excessive sweating

In addition to treating lines and wrinkles, Botox has a wide range of medical uses. For example, it has been FDA approved to treat excessive underarm sweating — a condition called hyperhidrosis. It’s normal to sweat a little, but excessive sweating can interfere with your daily life. You may find yourself perspiring a lot for no apparent reason. Underarm sweat tends to soak through clothes, leaving visible wet marks. To avoid this situation, you may resign yourself to wearing black or dark clothing every day.

Many people report that their excessive underarm sweat makes them feel embarrassed. If you’re one of the millions of people who suffer from excessive sweating, Botox may be the solution for you. In the armpits, Botox works by blocking the effects of a chemical that stimulates the sweat duct that causes perspiration. By injecting Botox into the skin, perspiration in the treatment area is reduced or eliminated. The results last for 4 to 6 months, and the session can be repeated to maintain your results.

Ideal candidates for Botox-type injectables

If you’re in NYC and are considering Botox or another neurotoxin wrinkle treatment, it may be the perfect option for your needs. At JUVA Skin & Laser Center, our staff will help you understand all your options for skin rejuvenation. Our team will determine if Botox or a similar treatment is right for you during your in-person consultation. We will determine whether cosmetic injectables will work for you, or if a different approach is better suited to your unique needs. Our dermatologists will need to discuss your medical conditions and relevant medical history to ensure which wrinkle treatment is appropriate.

We make our decisions based on strict medical criteria. Your skin thickness, type, and the severity of your wrinkles will all play a role in which treatment is right for you. Having said that, most patients turn out to be great candidates for Botox-type injections. Generally speaking, you may be an excellent candidate for Botox or other neurotoxins if:

  • You are 18 or older
  • You are not pregnant
  • You do not have a history of adverse reactions to the treatment
  • You are looking for a safe, effective, and minimally invasive cosmetic solution

What’s the difference between Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, and Jeuveau?

There are four FDA approved injectable neurotoxins: Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, and Jeuveau. We offer all four at JUVA Skin & Laser Center, and patients frequently ask us what the difference is between these products.

Botox is the most well-known brand name when it comes to neurotoxins. It’s the number one selling product in its category. Additionally, it was the first product of its kind to receive FDA approval for aesthetic purposes back in 2002. Since then, several comparable options have hit the market. These options are Dysport, Xeomin, and Jeuveau.

Jeuveau is the newest in the family of neurotoxin wrinkle treatments, receiving FDA approval in 2019. Jeuveau is unique because it was developed exclusively for aesthetic use, whereas products like Botox have medical uses as well as cosmetic. Neurotoxins are all very similar — at their core, they all rely on the same principle of using Botulinum toxin type A to limit muscle activity — but they are produced by separate companies and are different in some aspects.

These differences include:

Ingredients: These products are derived from different strains of the same toxin. In terms of formula, Botox, Dysport, and Jeuveau contain the active neurotoxin as well as complex proteins. These proteins are believed to protect the neurotoxin and facilitate absorption. Conversely, Xeomin does not contain complex proteins or additives. For that reason, it is referred to as a “stripped down” or “naked” injectable. The body is less likely to have an adverse reaction to Xeomin than other formulas because of its purity.
Onset: These neurotoxins may have a slightly different onset (the time it takes for results to appear).

Manufacturing: There are differences in the manufacturing process used to create these products. For example, Jeuveau is produced using a trademarked purification method called Hi-Pure™.

Dosing: These neurotoxins vary from each other in terms of dosing units. For example, if you usually receive 20 units of Botox, you won’t necessarily need 20 units of Dysport, Xeomin, or Jeuveau.

Although there are some slight differences between Botox Dysport, Xeomin, or Jeuveau, the actual injections and results for are very similar. Finding the right wrinkle relaxer for you is often a matter of personal preference. Our specialists will discuss your concerns, goals, and relevant medical history to steer you toward the ideal injectable for your situation.

What to expect during your treatment

Treatments with neurotoxin wrinkle treatments are generally quick and comfortable. These products are administered below the surface of the skin using a very small needle. Once injected, the formula begins to relax the targeted muscle and reduce its movement.

You may feel a mild pinching sensation during the injection process. We provide a topical anesthetic if you prefer, but many people find that this is unnecessary. The duration of your session will depend on the number of areas you wish to treat and the units being administered. It usually takes less than five minutes to treat each area.

Are there any side effects?

Life doesn’t slow down in NYC, making this zero-downtime procedure the perfect choice to keep up with your busy lifestyle. There are only very slight side effects, if any. After your wrinkle treatment, you may experience mild redness and swelling at the injection site. Occasionally, patients may also experience slight bruising that can be covered with makeup.

You may have heard of patients who experience drooping or other alarming side effects from Botox. This type of thing only happens when the provider is not experienced. At JUVA Skin & Laser Center in NYC, we staff only highly-trained and skilled injectors.

Results from Botox and other neurotoxins

Most patients begin to see noticeable results within several hours to several days, with the most noticeable change appearing after roughly two weeks. Generally, optimal results from products like Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, and Jeuveau tend to last up to 3 to 6 months. From there, the results of the treatment will fade gradually. If you want to maintain your original results, our specialists will administer follow-up injections.

The cost of Botox and similar treatments

Like many aesthetic treatments, the cost of Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, and Jeuveau tends to vary significantly between patients. The primary factor that affects the price is the number of units needed to achieve your goals. It’s typically a few hundred dollars per area, so the cost will depend on units and how many areas are treated.

This can be impacted by the areas you wish to treat and the strength of the targeted muscles. Before you receive any injections, our team will provide you with an estimated treatment cost. Be sure to keep an eye on the specials page on our website for the best deals.
