Do you have a tattoo that you want to get rid of? Whether it has become unattractive, no longer expresses you, or is associated with painful memories, there are many reasons why people want tattoos removed. In the past, tattoo removal was a surgical process that would often leave a scar, but modern laser tattoo removal allows you to remove nearly any tattoo completely, without surgery and without a scar.
This page gives some background information about laser tattoo removal, but tattoos are highly variable, and the only way to know what results you can expect and how long they may take to achieve is to have your tattoo evaluated in person by one of our laser experts. How Laser Tattoo Removal Works
Tattoos are made up of ink that has been placed into the deeper layer of the skin, the dermis. This layer of skin is not shed like the upper layers of your skin, but remains in place, which is what makes tattoos permanent. In order to remove them, the cells that hold the ink have to be removed.
Laser tattoo removal, like laser hair removal, operates on a principle known as selective photothermolysis. You know that if you wear a dark shirt, it absorbs more heat from the sun than if you wear a lighter color, and the same happens when we shine a laser on your skin. The ink absorbs more light than the surrounding skin and gets heated up until it is destroyed. The broken down ink is then removed by the body.
How Many Treatments Do You Need?
There are many factors that determine how many treatments it will require to remove your tattoo. First, the number of colors of ink. Each ink color absorbs and is destroyed by a different kind of light, requiring separate treatments to remove. Another factor is how densely the ink has been placed. Finally, the contrast between your skin and the tattoo is a factor. The darker your skin or the lighter the ink color, the harder the tattoo will be to remove.
It would be theoretically possible to remove a tattoo in a single treatment, but this would result in scarring because the surrounding skin would be damaged along with the ink-bearing cells. To prevent scarring, we take a gradual approach that spaces out the removal and allows your skin to be almost as if you had never received a tattoo.
