Reach Your Goal Weight With Lipo

If you’re at or near your goal weight but are still unhappy with your figure because of stubborn pockets of fat, liposuction in NYC at JUVA Skin & Laser Center may be able to give you the solution you’re looking for. Areas of fat on the belly, love handles, bra rolls, and thighs very often do not respond to diet and exercise but can be removed with liposuction.

What is liposuction?

Liposuction is a minimally invasive surgical procedure for reducing or eliminating localized fat deposits. The procedure slims and re-shapes areas of the body and improves body contours by breaking up and suctioning the fat out of the body. Patients should be aware that liposuction is a body contouring procedure, not a weight loss method.

How liposuction works

The first step in liposuction is the injection of an anesthetic to numb the area that will be treated. Small incisions are then made near the area to insert a small, hollow tube called a cannula into the fat deposits. Suction is applied to the fat deposit through the cannula, which removes some of the fat. When the desired amount of fat is removed, the cannula is removed, the area is dressed, and a compression garment is applied.

Difference between traditional liposuction and SmartLipo

One limitation of liposuction is that it does not tighten the skin — it only removes fat. This is where SmartLipo™ improves upon traditional liposuction and enhances results for many patients. Instead of using a regular cannula, SmartLipo utilizes a much smaller, temperature-sensing one. In addition, SmartLipo uses a state-of-the-art laser that offers two benefits. First, the laser breaks up fat cells, making them easier to remove with less incidental trauma to other tissues in the area (such as nerves and blood vessels).

This reduces discomfort, reduces bleeding, and shortens liposuction recovery time. Second, the laser energy stimulates a healing response in the skin, resulting in collagen production. This means that the skin at the treatment area will be tighter, smoother, and younger-looking. The results from SmartLipo are so remarkable and the benefits are so clear that our team at JUVA Skin & Laser Center is convinced that there’s no reason to continue to use traditional liposuction.

Liposuction recovery

Regarding liposuction, it’s very important to take into account the recovery time after the procedure and to remember that you won’t be able to simply resume your life immediately after the procedure. Taking a week off from exercise will reduce your risk of complications and improve the overall quality of your results.

Note: This page is intended to help people considering liposuction to understand the recovery period after the procedure. Current patients should consult the post-operative instructions they were given at the time of their procedure.

The day of your procedure

After your procedure, you will be taken to our recovery area so that we can monitor you to ensure you’re sufficiently recovered, with no signs of complications developing before you leave. You will need a responsible adult to drive you home. We recommend that you also have a responsible adult stay with you for the rest of the day. If you feel up to it, try to walk around your home the day of your procedure. It’s not crucial, but it can help reduce your risks from the procedure. You can also eat if you want, and we recommend that you drink hydrating fluids.

The first week of recovery

During your first week after liposuction, you’ll experience some minor discomfort. This is usually minor and can be controlled with medication. You will also be wearing a special compression garment to help encourage your body to heal into the desired shape. During this first week you can engage in short, non-strenuous walks outside, and you may return to non-strenuous work within a day or two after your procedure. Feel free to hang out with friends, but avoid alcohol during the first week. This is also the time to monitor yourself for complications.

Two weeks after liposuction

At the end of your first two weeks of recovery, we will evaluate your progress. You will likely be able to stop wearing the compression garment after the first week. In addition, you can begin returning gradually to your normal exercise routine. At your follow-up appointment, we will talk about your routine and advise you when you can return to each activity.

Three weeks after liposuction

You should begin seeing results at the end of your first few weeks of recovery. Final results, however, will take several months to become apparent. Visibility of results will depend on your body’s creation of new collagen. By six months, you should see final results.

Scarring

Any time the skin is cut, there will be a scar; however, the scars from liposuction are so small they are barely visible. We will give you post-operative instructions that will help your scars become as subtle as possible after the procedure.

How can I reduce risks with liposuction?

At JUVA Skin & Laser Center, our team does everything possible to reduce your potential risk from liposuction. Most importantly, your procedure will be performed by a board-certified dermatologist with extensive training and experience in liposuction.

Next, our AAAHC-accredited facility is fully prepared to handle any emergency that may occur.

We follow recommended anti-infection protocols, and if necessary, we have transfer agreements with nearby hospitals. We only use sedation and local anesthesia when performing liposuction — not general anesthesia. General anesthesia increases risks associated with liposuction.

We also use SmartLipo for our liposuction procedures. SmartLipo can reduce your risk of complications by more precisely targeting fat and leaving other tissues intact. In a study of our first 500+ SmartLipo procedures, we saw zero serious complications. In the years since then, SmartLipo has continued to show the same very high safety profile.

You also have an important role to play in reducing your risks during a liposuction procedure. When we both do our parts, liposuction risks are very small, and complications can be handled quickly without lasting effects. To minimize your risks, you should:

Be honest with us about medical history and current medications, including herbal supplements

Lipo FAQ

What happens during a liposuction procedure?

Liposuction removes fat while keeping the skin intact. The procedure is performed using a small, thin, blunt-tipped cannula (a hollow tube) which is inserted through small incisions that are made in the skin. The excess fat is broken up and suctioned out of the body through the cannula.

How long will liposuction results last?

Liposuction results can last forever. Once the fat cells are removed, they don’t come back — so even if you end up gaining weight in the future, your body won’t gain as much weight to the area you had treated. If you gain weight, however, the fat cells that do remain could expand in other areas. This is why it’s important to not gain weight after liposuction.

What’s the difference between liposuction and a tummy tuck?

Although the goal with both liposuction and a tummy tuck is to help achieve a more aesthetically pleasing body contour, they are very different procedures. A tummy tuck specifically addresses loose skin on the abdomen, whereas the goal of liposuction is to remove fat, and may even create loose skin (if not performed using SmartLipo). In liposuction, fat is removed from areas of the body using a cannula, which suctions the fat out of the body. There are no large incisions made with liposuction. However, in a tummy tuck, there is an incision made which reaches from hip to hip. The skin and abdominal fat are removed, the abdominal muscles are tightened, and the belly button is re-positioned. Neither liposuction nor a tummy tuck are considered to be weight loss procedures.

How do I prepare for my liposuction procedure?

Everything you need to know about preparing for your liposuction procedure will be discussed during your consultation. After determining that liposuction is right for your needs, we will provide you with specific instructions that must be closely followed in the weeks leading up to your appointment.
