If you are at or near your goal weight but are still unhappy with your figure, liposuction may be able to help by targeting unsightly bulges of fat that prevent you from achieving the slim, attractive look you desire. Belly fat, love handles, bra rolls, thigh fat, and other stubborn fat deposits that do not respond to diet and exercise can be removed with liposuction.
This page can help you understand liposuction and what it can generally achieve, but specific recommendations can only be made after a personal consultation that includes an evaluation of the desired treatment area. Please call JUVA Skin & Laser Center at (212) 688-5882 today to schedule an appointment at our practice in Mid-town Manhattan.

What Is Liposuction?
Liposuction is a minimally invasive surgical procedure for reducing or eliminating localized fat deposits. It is a body contouring procedure, not a weight loss method.
What Can Liposuction Accomplish?
Liposuction is a great procedure for removing excess fat from one or more areas of the body to improve the overall appearance of your figure. Liposuction can be used to treat many areas where fat commonly accumulates, including:
- Upper back/ bra rolls
- Enlarged male breasts (gynecomastia)
- Upper arms
- Lower back
- Waist (love handles/muffin top)
- And other areas
Virtually any area where fat accumulates can be treated with liposuction.
How Does Liposuction Work?
The first step in liposuction is the injection of a fluid into the treatment area. This fluid contains an anesthetic that numbs the area to be treated. Small incisions are used to insert a small hollow tube, called a cannula, into fat deposits. Suction is applied to the fat deposit through the cannula, removing some of the fat. When the desired amount of fat is removed, the area is dressed and a compression garment is applied.
What’s the Difference Between Traditional Liposuction and SmartLipo?
SmartLipo is a variation on the traditional liposuction procedure that can improve results for many people. One limitation of liposuction is that it only removes fat from the treatment area. Then we depend on your skin to contract smoothly over the reduced fat.
The laser in SmartLipo offers two benefits. First, the laser breaks up fat cells, making them easier to remove with less incidental trauma to other tissues in the area, such as nerves and blood vessels. This reduces discomfort, reduces bleeding, and shortens liposuction recovery time. Second, the laser energy also stimulates a healing response in the skin, resulting in tighter skin over the treatment area for a smoother, more attractive contour.
The results from SmartLipo are so good and the benefits so clear that at JUVA Skin & Laser Center we believe there is no reason to use traditional liposuction any more.
Am I A Candidate For Liposuction?
The ideal candidate for liposuction is:
- At or near their target weight
- Has had a stable weight for six months or more
- Is in good general health
- Is not taking medications that may increase risks
- Understands the procedure, including its risks and benefits
- Has realistic expectations for results
Even if you do not meet all the above characteristics, you may be a good candidate for laser liposuction. The best way to learn whether you are a candidate for liposuction is to get a personal evaluation.

What Are the Risks Associated with Liposuction?
Horror stories about liposuction gone wrong make big headlines, but the truth is that when performed by a board-certified dermatologist in an accredited facility, liposuction is a very safe procedure. Hundreds of thousands of people undergo liposuction every year with few incidents.
At JUVA Skin & Laser Center, we want to make sure you are fully informed about liposuction before you make a commitment to the procedure, which is why we provide this summary of potential risks and complications.
Some people prefer to talk about risks in person. During a consultation we can explain everything in detailed, straightforward language and make sure you understand the potential risks.
There are many potential risks associated with liposuction, including:
- Seroma (fluid collection)
- Uneven contour/unfavorable cosmetic result
- Long-term numbness or discomfort in treatment area
Serious risks are very rare.
How Can I Reduce Risks?
At JUVA Skin & Laser Center, we do everything possible to reduce your potential risk from liposuction. Most importantly, your procedure will only be performed by a board-certified dermatologist with extensive training and experience in liposuction.
Next, our AAAHC-accredited facility is fully prepared to handle any emergency that should occur. We follow recommended anti-infection protocols and if necessary have transfer agreements with nearby hospitals.
We only use sedation and local anesthesia when performing liposuction, not general anesthesia. General anesthesia increases risks associated with liposuction.
We also use SmartLipo for our liposuction procedures. SmartLipo can reduce your risk of complications by more precisely targeting fat and leaving other tissues intact. In a study of our first 500+ SmartLipo procedures, we saw zero serious complications. In the years since then, SmartLipo has continued to show the same very high safety profile.
You also have an important role to play in reducing your risks during a liposuction procedure. To minimize your risks, you should:
- Be honest with us about medical history and current medications, including herbal supplements
- Follow pre-operative and postoperative instructions carefully
- Contact us immediately if you have any questions or concerns during your liposuction recovery
When we both do our parts, liposuction risks are very small and complications can be handled quickly without lasting effects.
What Can I Expect During Liposuction Recovery?
If you are considering liposuction, it is important to take into account the recovery time after the procedure. Although there is less downtime, it is important to remember that you cannot simply resume your life immediately after liposuction. Taking a week off from exercise after liposuction will reduce your risk of complications and improve the overall quality of your results.
This page is intended to help people considering liposuction to understand the recovery period after the procedure. Current patients should consult the postoperative instructions they were given at the time of their procedure.
The Day Of Your Procedure
After your liposuction procedure, you will be taken to our recovery area. We do not use general anesthesia, so there is no need to worry about you coming out of anesthesia, but it is still important to monitor you to ensure you are sufficiently recovered with no signs of developing complications before you are released. You will need a responsible adult to drive you away from our facility after your liposuction. We recommend that this or another responsible adult remain with you for the remainder of the day.
If you feel up to it, you can walk around the day of your procedure. It’s not crucial, but it can help reduce your risks from the procedure. You can eat if you want, and we recommend that you drink hydrating fluids to prevent dehydration.
The First Week Of Recovery
During your first week, you will experience some minor discomfort from your liposuction procedure. This is typically minor and can be controlled with medication. You will also be wearing a special compression garment or girdle that helps encourage your body to heal into the desired shape. This is also the time to monitor yourself for complications.
During this first week you can engage in short, non-strenuous walks and you may return to non-strenuous work within a day or two after your procedure. Feel free to hang out with friends, but please avoid alcohol during this first week.
Full Recovery And Final Results
At the end of your first two weeks of recovery, we will evaluate your recovery. You will likely be able to stop wearing the compression garment after the first week. In addition, you can begin returning gradually to your normal exercise routine. At your follow-up appointment, we will talk about your routine and advise you when you can return to each activity.
You should begin seeing results at the end of your first few weeks of recovery, one of the benefits of SmartLipo. Final results of liposuction take several months to become apparent, however. They depend on your body’s creation of new collagen. By six months, you should be seeing the results you desired.
Any time the skin is cut, there will be a scar, but the scars from liposuction are so small they are barely detectable. We will give you post-operative instructions that will help your scars become as subtle as possible after the procedure.
